Legal Phrases Processing Based On A Controlled Lingusitic Model

Legal Information Processing System

Meaning Understanding is one of the most urgent problem in the area of Natural Language Processing. Our idea comes from the intuition of Linguistic Intelligence. Communication Environment controlls underlining Concepts to be transmitted through linguistic activities. This investigation gives us some useful ideas for realizing Meaning Understanding.

We have proposed a Controlled Lingusitic Model for Legal Phrases and Feature & Logical Structure Representative Framework. By applying these investigations we have been developing LIPS (Legal Information Processing System).

We are using "United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods" (Japanese Translation Version by Sono & Yamate, Seirin-shobou) as the materials of legal phrases.

Our system LIPS is expected to be the core engine of Legal Knowledge-base Management System, Legal Consaltant System, Computer Aided Instruction System for Legal Study, et al.

The LIPS consists of several systems: LIPS Engine, LIPS Environment, LIPS Manager, and LIPS Tagger. LIPS Engine has a couple of components: LIPS Analizer and LIPS Generator. LIPS Analizer consists of three modules: Morphological Analyzer, Syntactic/Semantic Analyzer, and Logical Analyzer. LIPS-Tools involving some of them are ready for free download from this Web.
